On some measures, France has the most integrated (and secularised) Muslim population in Europe. For example, attitude research shows that French Muslims share values closer to those of their non-Muslim neighbours than in other European countries (Connor 2010 391). Largely due to the success of its film version, Vikas Swarup’s Slumdog Millionaire (Black Swan, London, 2005, originally called Q and A) again drew the attention of the Western world to the problems postcolonial India has to face: poverty, crime, sex abuse, exploitation of children, police brutality and many more. Abstract Background Popular protests have broken out worldwide, particularly in the last few years. In 2019, numerous demonstrations against an extradition bill occurred in Hong Kong until pandemic restrictions were imposed. The policing response relied heavily on methods such as batons, tear gas and rubber bullets.
